Leaving on a Jet Plane

Leaving on a jet plane has been playing over and over again in my mind all day. Not just the song, but the scene from Armageddon, you know the one where Ben Affleck sings to Liv Tyler. here Not sure why that scene is what is sticking with me, but I’ve decided to embrace it, and am now expecting Ben to appear before I board the plane.

We depart for Port-au-Prince, Haiti tomorrow for one week to meet Hans Garoute, our partner at INDEPCO. He is such a joy to speak to over the phone I cannot wait to put a face the voice that booms from speaker phone on a nearly weekly basis. As one of our friends put it, he’s like the Charlie to us Angels, or rather buttons.  But unlike the Angels, we the Buttons, finally get to meet our Charlie:)

All day today was spent running around the city, acquiring a new camcorder to record interviews, printing (double sided obviously) agendas, projection plans and new designs to be brought to sewers to work on.  It all still feels a little surreal. Welcome to the real world.

We are met with enthusiasm by parents, friends and roommates seeing us off and wishing us safe travels.  To be honest I think this is the most excited I have ever been to take a trip. It just feels so monumental and long time in the coming for the Local Buttons Design Junction project. I was actually so delirious with anticipation that I forgot to have coffee today, and that pretty much never happens.

We now sit amongst our little suitcases trying to figure out just exactly how one dresses business casual when the weather is 33 degrees Celsius and the city you are visiting is no longer really a city…

We’ll keep you posted on how it goes
